Drains prevent water from passing them. They are useful in preventing water from flooding the area, for example: outside the Shower.

For a drain to be effective, it should be placed around the exit from the shower room, including diagonally.

It might not be obvious at first, but the drain is not required to be connected to the water pipes, and you can put doors on top of drains.

As of Revision 3 it appears that placing a drain and shower head in the same square does stop the water from overflowing.

Placing a drain on a toilet makes it impossible for a tunnel to be dug in escape mode.
