Each prisoner has a set group of traits. The traits influence the crimes they are sentenced for and their behavior in your prison. You cannot see the traits normally unless you open your save file with a text editor. Prisoners will not commit certain crimes if they don't match a required trait, however the developers have suggested that occasionally prisoners may be innocent of the crime they were accused of.

Traits and Their Effects

There are twelve total traits and many have an affect on how a prisoner reacts in many situations. Keep in mind that the information on traits is very limited and some of the descriptions are not necessarily wholly accurate.

  1. Violent: This trait influences how likely a prisoner is to fight others. They are probably much more likely to start or join riots. Any crime that involves intentionally physically hurting someone is likely indication that they have this trait.
    • 10% chance of minimum security prisoners having this trait.
    • 50% chance of medium security prisoners having this trait.
    • 90% chance of maximum security prisoners having this trait.
  2. Fraud: General 'white collar crime'. Any non-violent crimes involving stealing money or forging documents. It is unknown if this has any effect on behavior.
    • 80% chance of minimum security prisoners having this trait.
    • 40% chance of medium security prisoners having this trait.
    • 0% chance of maximum security prisoners having this trait.
  3. Risks Life: When the life of the prisoner or the victims of his reckless behavior are put at risk the prisoner usually has this trait. someone with this trait is possibly more likely to try to escape through an open door.
    • 0% chance of minimum security prisoners having this trait.
    • 30% chance of medium security prisoners having this trait.
    • 80% chance of maximum security prisoners having this trait.
  4. Destructive: Prisoners who have the 'Destructive' trait are much more likely to vandalize your prison or their cells if angry.
    • 20% chance of minimum security prisoners having this trait.
    • 50% chance of medium security prisoners having this trait.
    • 90% chance of maximum security prisoners having this trait.
  5. Theft: With this trait, a prisoner is likely to steal from your prison if they want something.
    • 90% chance of minimum security prisoners having this trait.
    • 70% chance of medium security prisoners having this trait.
    • 30% chance of maximum security prisoners having this trait.
  6. Narcotics: These prisoners are addicts and will seek out Narcotics contraband.
    • 50% chance of minimum security prisoners having this trait.
    • 50% chance of medium security prisoners having this trait.
    • 20% chance of maximum security prisoners having this trait.
  7. Lethal: Prisoners with this trait are likely commit crimes that pose a direct intentional threat to another person's life, such as murder. They may be more likely to steal weapons or attack guards.
    • 0% chance of minimum security prisoners having this trait.
    • 10% chance of medium security prisoners having this trait.
    • 90% chance of maximum security prisoners having this trait.
  8. Sexual: Likely to commit crimes of sexual nature such as rape. No known effect in prison. (Effect in prison might be possibly scrapped due to controversy)
    • 0% chance of minimum security prisoners having this trait.
    • 10% chance of medium security prisoners having this trait.
    • 10% chance of maximum security prisoners having this trait.
  9. Controlling: Usually involved in crimes where the criminal subjugates the victim such as kidnapping. Likely has an effect on the prison but unknown what that effect is.
    • 0% chance of minimum security prisoners having this trait.
    • 30% chance of medium security prisoners having this trait.
    • 60% chance of maximum security prisoners having this trait.
  10. Vehicular: Crimes involving cars.
    • 20% chance of minimum security prisoners having this trait.
    • 40% chance of medium security prisoners having this trait.
    • 0% chance of maximum security prisoners having this trait.
  11. Clever: Clever prisoners often commit crimes that require some intelligence. They will often have the "Fraud" trait as well. These prisoners are the only ones that can dig tunnels out of your prison.
    • 30% chance of minimum security prisoners having this trait.
    • 20% chance of medium security prisoners having this trait.
    • 10% chance of maximum security prisoners having this trait.
  12. Petty: Small crime.
    • 50% chance of minimum security prisoners having this trait.
    • 10% chance of medium security prisoners having this trait.
    • 0% chance of maximum security prisoners having this trait.
